WR improves interpretive quality and enhances security by being filmless and paperless for its clinical systems.

With 58 radiologists and 300+ support staff spread among 16 imaging centers and area hospitals, Wake Radiology realizes that the benefits of going filmless and paperless are substantial. Foremost is the fact that immediate access to all films and paperwork from any Wake Radiology location improves the quality of interpretive services. It allows radiologists to subspecialize—for example, reading musculoskeletal images captured at any of the offices. Patients can also be offered a greater choice of times and locations for their exams. Staffing and equipment are optimized because work is balanced among offices and radiologists.

Security enhancement is another welcome advantage of a paperless office in view of HIPAA requirements. In addition, there are valuable savings in square footage where space has been cramped by a paper filing system.

Wake Radiology now captures all radiological images electronically, including diagnostic X-rays, CT and MRI scans, ultrasound, mammography, fluoroscopy, angiography, nuclear medicine, and bone density scans. The practice also captures electronically all patient and exam information, which includes scanning faxes and paperwork brought in by patients.

The data are housed in a new, 1,140-square-foot Corporate Data Center adjacent to Wake Radiology’s administrative offices on Browning Place in Raleigh. The facility also includes ample space for IT staff and offers training and conference rooms.

To ensure complete reliability, availability, and security, the data center is designed to a Tier 2+ redundancy classification. Power, servers, networking, and HVAC are all duplicated with automatic fail-over. A standby data center is also available. Security features include biometric identification for physical access and strong authentication requirements for application use. Data center and network monitoring is provided 24/7/365.
