The Clear Choice in Radiology Services

Founded in 1953, Wake Radiology is proud to have earned the trust of patients and providers alike.
Learn about our History of Firsts

Right-sized: large enough to serve you, small enough to know you

Wake Radiology is just the right size. We are large enough to provide the high quality comprehensive imaging services patients and referring providers require. With dedicated clinical teams of 4-10 radiologists trained on a particular subspecialty, each section is large enough to consistently deliver the true subspecialty interpretations, complete coverage and quick responses. Sections are also small enough to provide the level of customization and personal interaction patients and their referring providers desire.

Local, physician-directed, independent practice focused on quality care

Unlike many of our competitors, Wake Radiology is not owned by a major healthcare conglomerate or national outpatient imaging business. Instead of answering to outside investors, we remain a local, independent, radiologist-owned practice, led by imaging experts who put patient care first. More importantly, our independence and unique subspecialty practice model help raise the local standard of care by delivering high quality interpretations and physician service as well as a superior, cost effective approach to patient care and satisfaction.

The clear choice: preferred by patients by nearly three to one

Patients in the Triangle understand the important role radiology plays in healthcare. In a recent independent study by Public Policy Polling, 95% of adults report they believe radiology is important to overall healthcare, and a large number recognize there is a “significant difference in quality” among the area’s providers. Wake Radiology enjoys the highest favorability ratings of any Triangle radiology practice—nearly twice that of the next outpatient medical imaging provider. In addition to this distinction, adult men and women prefer Wake Radiology to any other group by nearly three to one.  Wake Radiology is also a preferred outpatient imaging provider for Triangle providers, which further fuels our commitment to deliver a superior level of care. For 60 years, our physicians have introduced the technologies and delivered the conclusive reports and clinical decision support that can make the difference in routine or lifesaving healthcare decisions.

Wake Radiology has outpatient offices with evening and weekend hours, walk-ins welcome for select exams

Wake Radiology now has outpatient offices conveniently located throughout the Triangle. Our offices feature convenient, well-lit parking, and many have evening and weekend hours. MRI services are provided seven days a week with early morning and late evening appointments available. Wake Radiology can therefore accommodate appointment requests within just a few days, if not hours. For our screening mammography patients, same-day appointments are available and walk-ins are welcome. We simply require that eligible women have visited their physician within the past 18 months. And routine diagnostic X-rays are also available on a walk-in basis if a patient has a signed physician referral. True physician subspecialization and expertise

As the region’s largest radiology practice, Wake Radiology brings together the knowledge of nearly 50 radiologists who perform close to 600,000 procedures each year. Our clinicians are highly trained in their subspecialty—just like our referring physicians—and come from the finest universities and teaching hospitals in the country. Our physicians are board certified by the American Board of Radiology (ABR) and highly trained in their subspecialty. Many radiologists hold a Certificate of Added Qualifications (CAQ) in addition to their fellowship training, and all of our physicians voluntarily participate in the ABR Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program.

True subspecialty interpretations

Wake Radiology’s unique breadth and depth of clinical expertise ensure that all outpatient imaging studies that require interpretation by a radiologist who is fellowship/subspecialty trained on that topic occur. For example, all spine MRI studies are read by an expert in neuroimaging or orthopedic radiology, and screening mammograms are never interpreted by a pediatric, neuro or orthopedic radiologist. However, the consistency in our core training enables everyone to deliver skilled interpretations on the more standard diagnostic exams.

Technologist subspecialization and national certification

Wake Radiology technologists have earned the highest level of certification possible. All X-ray technologists are certified by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT), which means they have graduated from an accredited radiology program and have the technical expertise needed to provide high quality care. For MRI, CT and mammography, they have also earned an advanced certification by the ARRT. Our ultrasound technologists are certified by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS). Each technologist who performs DXA has been certified by the ARRT and the International Society for Clinical Densitometry (ISCD). Our nuclear medicine technologists have been certified through ARRT and the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB).

Extensive range of services from the routine to the complex

Wake Radiology combines clinical expertise and advanced radiology technologies to provide a full range of leading-edge imaging studies to detect, diagnose and stage disease for acute and chronic conditions. This includes MR whole body metastatic bone surveys, breast ultrasound elastography and 3D mammography as well as liver brachytherapy. We also operate the area’s only freestanding PET-CT facility. The industry’s leading accreditations

Wake Radiology has received the highest American College of Radiology (ACR) and ISCD accreditations possible for imaging in the United States. Earning these designations signifies that Wake Radiology is among the best in the specialty and demonstrates the quality and range of radiology exams we perform. Learn more

Comparison of prior exams for conclusive reports

Wake Radiology understands the important role that prior exams play in rendering an informed and thorough interpretation. We review available digital imaging studies performed at Wake Radiology as well as request and review exams performed by other radiology practices. This time-intensive approach delivers essential information needed for more accurate reports and helps eliminate duplicate exams.

Cost-effective care

At Wake Radiology, we aim to ensure that the right test is given to the right patient at the right time for the right medical reasons and refrain from performing unnecessary exams that add to the bottom line. We are available via hotline to discuss exam selection up front with referring providers and take time upfront to carefully understand, confirm and customize needed procedures.

Insurance and financial assistance

Wake Radiology is a contracted, in-network provider for most major managed care insurance plans. For patients whose plans are not within our managed care network, we file claims on their behalf. Importantly, most of these insurance plans (including UnitedHealthcare) have out-of-network benefits that help cover Wake Radiology imaging fees. Wake Radiology also recognizes that some patients do not have insurance and/or require financial assistance. We offer payment plans to ease their cash flow burden or prompt payment discounts to lower their out-of-pocket costs. Learn more

The right dose: our commitment to low-dose radiation and safety

Wake Radiology has long been a low-dose leader in the Triangle, adopting rigorous CT dose compliance and quality control standards for our outpatient facilities that go above and beyond the standards set by the American College of Radiology (ACR). Our commitment to the right dose means that minimizing radiation exposure while maintaining diagnostic quality imaging is at the core of what we do. CT is one of the most powerful diagnostic tools Wake Radiology offers to referring providers and their patients. These exams combine special X-ray equipment with sophisticated computers to produce the CT images. We understand the importance of balancing patient safety and radiation concerns with the need for diagnostic quality imaging, and have developed a CT program that reflects this. Learn more

Invested in our community

Wake Radiology is committed to delivering healthcare to our community. Our physicians perform imaging for a significant number of uninsured patients, primarily through our work at WakeMed Health and Hospitals, and Maria Parham Medical Center. We provide nearly $500,000 in charity care each year through Project Access, Alliance Medical Ministry and the Open Door Clinic.

We are also proud to support many medical charities and associations as well as several major cultural groups that make a difference in the overall health and vibrancy of our Triangle community. From the American Cancer Society and Komen Race for the Cure to the North Carolina Symphony and Carolina Ballet, Wake Radiology understands that we all benefit when these organizations thrive.
