CT Studies

Computed tomography (CT) is one of the most powerful and accurate diagnostic tools Wake Radiology offers for rapid evaluation of serious illness and injury in adults and children. CT is particularly useful to patients and their referring physicians because it can image many different types of tissue with great clarity from a short exam time. These exams can also obtain specific diagnostic information and tissue characterization that are complementary to other imaging modalities such as ultrasound, nuclear medicine, PET and MRI. While each imaging technique has advantages and limitations, CT combines the following advantages into a single session:

  • Rapid acquisition of images
  • Wealth of clear and specific information
  • Multi-dimensional view of any body part

Among other benefits, CT exams can help patients and their referring physicians by lowering the chance of a missed diagnosis, improving cancer diagnosis and treatment, and guiding the treatment of common conditions such as injury, cardiac disease and stroke. CT is often the imaging method of choice in emergent situations, and it is also an alternative to MRI for patients who have known MRI contraindications, are claustrophobic or obese.
