Pediatric Imaging Studies

Wake Radiology provides a full range of pediatric imaging services, from routine studies to those typically viewed as more complex or complicated. X-ray, ultrasound, fluoroscopy and nuclear medicine exams and CT are all offered at our pediatric imaging center. All X-ray, CT and many ultrasound exams done for children at our other outpatient offices are sent to our outpatient pediatric imaging center. This West Raleigh office acts as a central hub in the evaluation of and collaboration on pediatric imaging exams. View definitions and prep instructions for select exams

Wake Radiology pediatric imaging services include the following:

Ultrasound, Including

  • Abdomen
  • Head
  • Pylorus
  • Appendix
  • Pelvis
  • Spine
  • Hip screening for developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) in newborns with breech presentation
  • Pelvis-adrenal for precocious puberty
  • Soft tissue

X-ray (AKA Plain Film)

  • Full range of diagnostic radiographs, including long-cassette scoliosis imaging and skeletal surveys

Low-dose Pulsed Fluoroscopy

  • Barium swallow
  • Modified barium swallow in conjunction with a speech pathologist
  • Contrast enema
  • Small bowel series
  • Chest and airways
  • Upper GI
  • Voiding cystourethrogram

Low-dose Computed Tomography (CT)

  • Wide range of specially tailored pediatric CT protocols that do not require sedation and minimize radiation exposure while maintaining image quality (the “right dose”)

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

  • MRI and MRA performed at our Raleigh MRI office for children ages 6+ who do not require sedation (MRV?)
  • MR Enterography (MRE) performed at our Raleigh MRI and Cary locations

Nuclear Medicine

  • Bone scans (3-phase, whole body)
  • Cystograms (RNC)
  • Gastric emptying scans
  • Hepatobiliary scans (HIDA with CCK)
  • DMSA renal scans
  • Renal with diuretic (Lasix)
  • Thyroid scans
  • Meckel’s scans


  • IR services, including biopsies performed by Wake Radiology interventional radiologists
  • Rheumatology injections performed by Wake Radiology orthopedic radiologists
  • Bone density scans including densitometry (DXA) interpreted by Wake Radiology ISCD-certified orthopedic radiologists
  • Wake Radiology also performs imaging work for patients with chronic diseases who need coordinated care at a tertiary care center
