NC Medicaid to Extend Coverage to 3D Mammography

Wake Radiology Supports Coverage Change That Takes Place Later This Spring

RALEIGH, April 4, 2018 — Wake Radiology, the Triangle’s leading provider of outpatient medical imaging, supports North Carolina Medicaid’s decision to begin covering 3D mammography later this spring. 3D mammography is also known as breast tomosynthesis.

When this goes into effect later this year, the state’s Medicaid program will join Medicare and the area’s largest private insurance carriers who have all extended coverage to include this advanced screening.

What this means specifically for NC Medicaid patients is that a 3D mammogram will be covered in the same manner that traditional or 2D mammography services have been covered.

As the Triangle’s leader in 3D mammography, Wake Radiology applauds this important change in coverage. We support all insurance-related decisions that make 3D mammography more accessible to patients. This move also aligns with our own commitment to offer 3D mammography services in communities where our patients live.

3D mammography offers:

  • Increased clarity of breast tissue
  • Greater accuracy for breast cancer detection
  • Fewer callbacks – reducing patient anxiety

Wake Radiology always recommends that patients verify coverage with their insurance carrier before their appointment. Wake Radiology offers payment plans for all exams, including 3D mammograms. Our breast imaging radiologists believe so strongly in this advanced technology we don’t want costs to keep you from having this potentially lifesaving screening.
