Wake Radiology Signs on as Year Round Partner with
Susan G. Komen for the Cure NC Triangle Affiliate

RALEIGH (June 19, 2009) – Wake Radiology has signed on as a year round partner with the Komen NC Triangle Affiliate. As a partner, the practice is committed to multiple events held by Komen NC Triangle over the next year and supports educational and outreach efforts by the organization.

The practice served as a Survivor Pavilion Tent sponsor at this year’s Komen NC Triangle Race for the Cure®, held Saturday, June 13 on the campus of Meredith College in Raleigh. The event attracted more than 23,000 participants and raised more than $1.75 million, which stays in the community to provide breast cancer screening, treatments, education and support for the medically underserved as well as for post-diagnosis programs.

“At Wake Radiology, we are dedicated to finding breast cancer as early as possible because we understand the human toll associated with this disease,” said Kerry E. Chandler, MD, director, Breast Imaging Services, Wake Radiology.  “Improvements in imaging and treatment have led to a marked decline in breast cancer mortality over the past ten years. While we are pleased with the progress made, we realize that many families are touched by this serious disease. We’re pleased to partner with the Komen Foundation as they are also on the front lines helping patients who live in our community.”

According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is expected to account for 27 percent – 192,000 people – of all new cancer cases diagnosed this year. One in eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. Nearly 40,000 people will die from the disease; however, breast cancer has a 90 percent five-year survival rate, if caught and treated in its early stages.

Wake Radiology’s walk team was led by employee co-captains Susan Montagne and Amy Aldrich. Breast cancer survivors who work at the practice, Lee Davis and Robin Feldbusch, along with patients who have been diagnosed and treated at Wake Radiology, were also members of the team.
