Wake Radiology’s Fuquay-Varina Office Earns International Accreditation for Bone Density Screenings

Fuquay-Varina location is one of 42 accredited facilities in the United States recognized for quality, accuracy and precision

FUQUAY-VARINA – Wake Radiology’s office in Fuquay-Varina has earned accreditation for bone density screenings by the International Society of Clinical Densitometry (ISCD). It is one of only 42 facilities in the nation accredited for the quality, accuracy and precision of its bone density screenings.

A bone density screening measures bone mass to estimate the risk of fracture and help detect osteoporosis, a chronic condition that is characterized by the increased the risk of broken bones. Osteoporosis affects 25 million Americans, including one in four women.

The Fuquay-Varina office, which opened in 2012, is the ninth Wake Radiology office to become an accredited bone densitometry facility. Wake Radiology was the first provider in the country to receive ISCD accreditation at multiple offices and currently operates nine of the 11 ISCD accredited facilities in North Carolina.

Dr. Joseph Melamed, a board certified musculoskeletal radiologist who specializes in bone density imaging and interpretation, leads Wake Radiology’s bone density initiatives. Teresa DeMartin, the practice’s principal bone density technologist, played a critical role in helping Wake Radiology achieve ISCD accreditation.

About Wake Radiology

Founded in 1953, Wake Radiology is the Triangle’s leading provider of outpatient medical imaging. Its physicians have been trained as experts in specific areas – ranging from breast cancer or pediatrics to sports or neuroradiology (brain and spine) – to better detect issues that others might miss. Another hallmark of Wake Radiology is its commitment to low-dose imaging and the elimination of unnecessary or duplicate exams. This approach improves patient outcomes and reduces the overall cost of healthcare.

Wake Radiology is the region’s largest outpatient imaging practice with 50 radiologists who perform nearly 600,000 procedures each year. It has 19 outpatient locations and provides imaging services at several area hospitals, including WakeMed Health and Hospitals, Maria Parham Medical Center and Franklin Medical Center. It is the first outpatient imaging provider in the Triangle to earn the American College of Radiology’s prestigious Breast Imaging Center of Excellence designation. Wake Radiology is an independent, locally owned and physician-led practice that actively supports the local community.
