Wake Radiology Secures Tenth 3D Mammography Unit

With Most Expansive Reach in the Area, This Revolutionary Breast Cancer Screening Tool Is Now Available in Fuquay-Varina

RALEIGH, September 29, 2016 — Wake Radiology, the Triangle’s leading provider of outpatient medical imaging, announced today that the practice is adding its tenth 3D mammography unit to its Fuquay-Varina office.  Now with almost triple as many units as any other local imaging provider, Wake Radiology is the Triangle leader in advanced breast imaging.

WakeRadiology_3DinFuqua-VarinaJust two years ago, Wake Radiology installed its first Hologic Genius™ 3D Mammography ™ unit in its North Hills office. In just 24 months, the practice has invested heavily in this life-saving technology installing Genius™ 3D mammography units in Cary, Chapel Hill, Garner, Smithfield, Wake Forest, multiple Raleigh locations – and now Fuquay-Varina.

“We truly believe in the benefits 3D mammography offers our patients. Simply put, it’s just a better mammogram,” said Dr. Lyndon Jordan, President and Managing Partner at Wake Radiology. “As a practice, we’re committed to this technology. We’re investing in the advanced equipment and in the additional training required to ensure our technologists obtain the best possible images. Our radiologists are finding more small cancers with 3D mammography. It’s the right thing for our patients and our practice. We’re proud to extend so many 3D options to women across the Triangle.”

“3D mammography is the single greatest advance in breast imaging in my career,” said Eithne Burke, Breast Imaging Radiologist and Co-Director of Breast Services at Wake Radiology. “It allows us to see so much better through a patient’s breast tissue and evaluate whether findings are real or related to superimposed tissue. It also allows us to see small tumors that are often obscured on the routine 2D mammogram.”

A 3D mammogram is performed in conjunction with a traditional 2D digital mammogram to create a more complete picture of breast tissue. During the 3D portion of the exam, the X-ray arm sweeps in a slight arc over the breast, taking multiple images. A computer then produces a layered 3D image of the breast tissue allowing a radiologist to scan through the one millimeter images like pages in a book. Said another way, 3D mammography provides greater detail and allows the radiologist to see “inside” the breast layer by layer to find cancers earlier than ever.

3D mammography offers surprising benefits over traditional mammography:

  • It is the most accurate screening exam available in fight against breast cancer.
  • It reduces callback rates by 40%.
  • It helps detect 41% of the most invasive cancers – at the earliest possible stage.
  • It offers advantages for women of all ages and of all breast densities.

During October 2016, Wake Radiology is asking women to make a “pinky promise” with someone they love that they’ll have a screening mammogram during the next 12 months. When it comes time to make good on that promise, all of us at Wake Radiology encourage you to consider having a 3D screening exam. We make it easy with multiplelocations throughout the Triangle offering 3D mammography. You can request a 3D mammogram appointment online or by calling 919.232.4700.
