Wake Radiology Applauds Blue Cross Blue Shield’s Decision to Cover 3D Mammography

BCBSNC Says Latest Technology in Breast Cancer Detection No Longer Considered “Investigational”

RALEIGH, April 26, 2017 — Wake Radiology, the Triangle’s leading provider of outpatient medical imaging, supports Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina’s recent announcement that it will expand coverage for breast tomosynthesis, also known as 3D mammography, to its commercially insured members.

Starting June 1, 2017, BCBSNC will extend 3D mammography benefits for breast cancer screening in the same manner that traditional or 2D mammography services have been covered.

As the Triangle leader in 3D mammography, Wake Radiology applauds this important change in coverage.

“We’ve invested in ten 3D mammography units so that women in every Triangle community have easy access to this revolutionary breast screening technology,” said Lyndon Jordan III, MD, President and Managing Partner. “We’re pleased that BCBCS recognizes the importance and advantage 3D mammography provides in early breast cancer detection and is extending coverage for this technology.”

For BCBSNC members who have health plans that cover preventative services at 100%, 3D mammography screening services will be covered at no member cost. Members are encouraged to read BCBSNC’s statement on this important change.
